Bougainvillea, San Diego Red

Common name:Bougainvillea, San Diego Red
Botanical name:Bougainvillea 'San Diego Red'

The large amount of flamboyant color on this species creates a wonderful accent in a garden. Varieties can be in bush or vine form; colors vary. Once established, they tend to be carefree. 'San Diego Red' blooms in red, with large green leaves. It is one of the hardiest, and will climb high. It is senstive to frost and will die back hard but comes back in a number of weeks. Be carefeul of this in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Shore Juniper

Common name:Shore Juniper
Botanical name:Juniperus conferta 'Blue Pacific'

This is the improved form of the Juniperus conferta, as the growth of this variety is more compact, with foliage that is a rich, blue-green color. Junipers are highly combustible plants.

Gazania, Treasure Flower

Common name:Gazania, Treasure Flower
Botanical name:Gazania X rigens leucolaena 'Sun Gold'

This Gazania variety is a moderately fast growing, low ground cover with gray fuzzy leaves and bright yellow daisies held above the foliage. It prefers light soil, good drainage and full sun to light shade. Allow plants to be irrigated in mornings so that foliage is dry at dusk. It is tolerant and dependable for tough situations, needing only some additional irrigation during the hottest seasons.

Soils and Compost:

Practice grass-cycling by leaving short grass clippings on lawns after mowing, so that nutrients and organic matter are returned to the soil.

Integrated Pest Management:

Remove irrigation water and fertilizer from areas where you don't want weeds to grow.
